Pay the $8 for the Basilica’s upper terrace

St. Mark’s Basilica is free to enter — and the free part is a slow, shuffling line. The one paid add-on, the Museo & terrace, is about $8 and it’s the whole reason to go.

Here’s the trick most people miss: the free ground-floor entry means a long queue and about ninety seconds of being herded past the mosaics. The Museo di San Marco ticket — about $8 — is a separate, almost empty entrance. It buys you the loggia, the original bronze horses, and the open-air terrace looking straight down the Piazza.

Book the timed Basilica entry on the official site (basilicasanmarco.it) and add the Museo ticket at checkout. Use the museum stairs immediately on your right as you enter — they skip the ground-floor crush entirely. Go late afternoon when the low light hits the gold mosaics and the terrace crowd thins out.

The one thing to skip

Don’t pay a reseller for a “guided skip-the-line Basilica experience” — they’re marking up that same $8 museum ticket by $40 or more. The line moves; the terrace ticket is the only upgrade that actually changes what you see.
